Philip Toshio Sudo is author of the popular and critically acclaimed Zen Guitar, Zen Computer, Zen Sex: The Way of Making Love, and Zen 24/7: All Zen/All the Time. As a Japanese-American author/musician, he brings a fresh perspective to the subject of Zen, using modern Western metaphors to present age-old principles of Eastern philosophy.
Sudo's background in zen comes from extensive study in Eastern philosophy and 12 years of living in Japan. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Macalester College and receiving a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he worked for six years as a financial reporter on Wall Street, then five years as managing editor at Scholastic Inc., an educational publishing firm. His work has received numerous awards, including the Olive Branch Award from the New York University Center on War, Peace, and the Media, for reporting on foreign affairs; Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association, for reporting on legal issues; and the Harry Chapin Media Award from the World Hunger Association, for reporting on world hunger. As a guitar player, he has recorded a critically acclaimed album of instrumental music, One Sound One Song.
